Introduction to Computer

A computer is an electronic device that accepts raw data as input, processes it according to a set of instructions (program), produces the result as output, and stores it for future use.

It can be defined by its four primary functions (The IPOS Cycle):

  1. Input: Takes in data from the user (via keyboard, mouse, scanner).

  2. Process: Manipulates the data using the Central Processing Unit (CPU).

  3. Output: Displays or produces the result (via monitor, printer, speaker).

  4. Storage: Saves the data permanently or temporarily (via hard drive, RAM, USB).

3. Key Characteristics

To be classified as a modern computer, the device generally possesses these traits:

4. Data vs. Information

A key part of defining a computer is understanding what it transforms:

Definition Summary:

"A computer is a high-speed electronic device that takes raw data as input, processes it under the control of a set of instructions (program), and produces the desired information as output."
