Advantages & Disadvantages
Advantages of Computers
High Speed:
Computers can perform millions of calculations in a fraction of a second, tasks that would take humans months or years to complete.
Accuracy:
Computers are 100% accurate. Errors usually occur due to human mistakes in data entry or programming (Garbage In, Garbage Out).
Large Storage Capacity:
They can store massive amounts of data (documents, images, videos) in a very small physical space compared to paper files.
Diligence:
Unlike humans, computers do not get tired, bored, or lose concentration. They can perform repetitive tasks with the same accuracy for hours.
Versatility:
A single computer can perform vastly different tasks, from calculating a payroll to designing a building or playing a movie.
Automation:
Computers can be programmed to perform complex tasks automatically, reducing the need for human intervention (e.g., controlling traffic lights or assembly lines).
Communication:
They enable instant communication across the globe through email, video conferencing, and social media.
Disadvantages of Computers
No Intelligence (Zero IQ):
A computer cannot think or make decisions on its own. It works purely based on the instructions (programs) given by humans.
Dependency:
Humans are becoming overly dependent on computers. If the system fails or the internet goes down, work often comes to a complete standstill.
Health Risks:
Prolonged use can lead to physical health issues such as eye strain, back pain, and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Unemployment:
Automation and software have replaced many jobs previously done by humans, leading to unemployment in certain sectors (e.g., manufacturing, data entry).
Data Security & Cybercrime:
Storing sensitive data digitally makes it vulnerable to hacking, viruses, phishing, and identity theft.
E-Waste (Environmental Impact):
Rapidly changing technology leads to computers being discarded frequently, creating electronic waste that is harmful to the environment if not recycled properly.
No Feelings:
Computers lack emotions and emotional intelligence. They cannot judge ethical or moral situations.
